Johnson named Breakthrough Athlete of the Year

Men's Basketball
Sophomore forward Damian Johnson was named men's Breakthrough Athlete of the Year at the second-annual Golden Goldys last night at the Radisson Hotel on campus.

Johnson won the award after leading the Gophers with 46 blocks and also grabbing 59 steals.
Johnson, arguably the star of the Gophers' season-long documentary "The Journey," appeared more concerned with the food served at the event than winning the award.

"There was a lot of finger food and appetizers," he told Mark Heise of the Daily Sports staff. "I'm used to a bigger meal so I'm still kind of hungry, but it was pretty good."

Tubby Smith was named men's coach of the year after guiding Minnesota to a 20-14 record and a NIT berth in his first season at the helm of the Gophers.
