UMN Morris acquires ride-sharing network

The University of Minnesota’s Morris campus has acquired the services of Zimride, a social network for coordinating carpools.

A private space on the ride-sharing network was purchased by the remote campus with money from the technology fee assessed to its students, a press release said.

The site allows students to find others with similar commutes to and from campus, so they can ride together. Zimride lets drivers post their number of available seats for a particular trip. Riders can reserve remaining seats for local and cross-country trips.

Zimride currently caters itself to university students and corporate employees. Morris students are required to login with their standard University email and password, and the service is free to use.

Students at other campuses seem to be able to use the service as well, since the site doesn’t differentiate between campus emails.

More than 240 Morris students have shared 170 carpools on the new Zimride space, the press release said, with destinations ranging from Minneapolis to Madison. Morris will be promoting the new service with posters across its campus.

The University of Minnesota, Morris is about 161 miles west of the Twin Cities campus.
