Former Gophers men's basketball guard Chip Armelin posted to his Twitter account Tuesday that he has signed a scholarship to play at Southern Mississippi.
Armelin was released from his scholarship at Minnesota in April, which freed up a spot for Trevor Mbakwe to return for a sixth season.
Armelin will be eligible to compete in the 2013-14 season after sitting out next season because of NCAA transfer rules.
He averaged 4.8 points and 1.8 rebounds in his two-year Gophers career, but he struggled in his final games with the team. He played mostly off the bench and lacked consistency despite showing promise as a playmaker.
Southern Mississippi lost in the first round of this year's NCAA tournament to Kansas State and posted a 25-9 record (11-5 Conference USA).
