Gophers track and field senior Jack Szmanda won the decathlon at the North American, Central American and Caribbean under-23 championships in Guanajuato, Mexico, on July 6-8.
Szmanda scored 7,061 points to top his fellow five competitors from the U.S., Mexico and the Dominican Republic. He won four of the 10 events.
An ankle injury forced Szmanda out of the U.S. Olympic trials held in late June. But he recovered in time to compete with the youth national team.
