Banham invited to Team USA University Games tryouts

Gophers women's basketball star guard Rachel Banham has accepted an invitation to attend USA Basketball Women's University Games Team tryouts, the University of Minnesota announced on Wednesday.

Banham is one of 31 college women's basketball players that accepted the invite. The trials will be held May 16-19 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The roster will be trimmed to 12 players, and that team will compete at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia, in July.

She's the first Gopher invited to Team USA tryouts since 2007.

Banham, who will be a junior during the 2013-2014 campaign, is coming off a phenomenal sophomore season in which she led the Big Ten in scoring at 21.0 points per game. She was named to the All-Big Ten First Team.

Banham is also well on her way to being the best bucket-getter in Minnesota history. Earlier this year, she eclipsed WNBA star Lindsey Whalen's school mark for points through a sophomore season. Banham scored 663 points in 2012-2013 — the fourth best single-season total by a Gopher.
