Report: University could renovate Mariucci Arena

Gophers athletics director Norwood Teague announced his $190 million plan for new athletics facilities last July, but according to a Star Tribune report released Thursday, there could be more renovations in the works.

The University is considering an $8 million upgrade to Mariucci Arena that could provide better sightlines, more seating, and maybe even a smaller sheet of ice, according to the report.

The Gophers currently play on an Olympic style ice rink. A smaller sheet of ice would mock the surface NHL teams play on during their season.

Mariucci Arena, opened in 1993, is one of the older athletics facilities on campus. It's light years younger than Williams Arena, which sits just across the street, but compared to TCF Bank Stadium, Ridder Arena, Baseline Tennis Center, and new Siebert Field, the home of the Gophers men's hockey team is relatively old.

Teague said in the Star Tribune report that any changes to Mariucci Arena would be privately funded.

There hasn't been any visible progress made on the $190 million facilities plan in the last 10 months, but Teague and his associates have said that fundraising efforts have been going well.
