Nelson arrested for alleged assault

Former Gophers quarterback Philip Nelson was arrested for alleged assault early Sunday morning in Mankato, Minn., KSTP reported.

Nelson, who transferred to Rutgers in January after playing two seasons at Minnesota, was booked into Blue Earth County Jail at 2:44 a.m. according to the report.

A representative from the Rutgers athletic communications office said the school was unaware of Nelson's arrest, which occurred after he allegedly assaulted Isaac Kolstad — a former linebacker for Minnesota State-Mankato.

Kolstad played for Mankato East High School, the crosstown rival of Nelson's Mankato West.

According to audio from a police scanner, Nelson allegedly kicked Kolstad in the head. In the same audio clip, an officer said Kolstad was unconscious and unresponsive when officers got to the scene. Kolstad was taken to Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato and is in critical condition. Nelson faces third degree assault charges.

Nelson started nine games for Minnesota during the 2013 campaign and passed for 1,306 yards, nine touchdowns and six interceptions. Last month, Nelson's personal trainer Terry Shea told the Minnesota Daily he transferred in large part due to Mitch Leidner's emergence at quarterback.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
