Twins tap Gophers alum as new manager

The Minnesota Twins announced Monday they have hired Gophers alum Paul Molitor as their new manager. The hire was officially announced at a press conference Tuesday.

"This is an incredible day for me," Molitor said at the press conference. "I have no doubt in my mind whatsoever that I am exactly where I am supposed to be right now here today."

Molitor was a member of the Gophers' baseball program from 1975-1977, and was selected as a First-Team All-American in 1976 and 1977.

In 1977, Molitor hit his way to a .325 batting average as the Gophers played in the College World Series.

Molitor, who was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in 1977, played 21 years in the MLB, three of which were played in Minnesota. The infielder was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2004.

With the Molitor hire, the University of Minnesota is the only school to currently have alumni as head coaches in all four major sports leagues in the United States.
