Racial profiling in
the Twin Cities
In the past few years, racial profiling has become a popular political buzzword. Even President Clinton recently addressed the subject in his last five days in office, during a speech on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. He did so in a plea he sent to Congress promoting his racial reconciliation policies. Locally, however, the effects of this racist practice were illustrated, as a six-month study of the subject was completed this past year monitoring the traffic-stopping habits of the Minneapolis and St. Paul police departments. The results were released earlier this month, and they ignited a heated debate in both law enforcement agencies and in their respective communities.

Best Buy should build downtown
As the nation's economy has been quickly expanding for the past few years, consumers have increased their spending at an even faster rate. As a result, many retailers have grown considerably during the 1990s, and expanded their operations. Best Buy is one of the companies that have had the most significant growth, as it is now one of the top consumer electronics retailers in the nation. Currently based out of their Eden Prarie headquarters, they have recently been seeking to expand to a new location in Richfield. However, instead of perpetuating suburban office parks, they should instead build their headquarters in downtown Minneapolis.

Letters to the Editor
While I wholeheartedly agree with Samantha Pace's editorial on the need for greater understanding of the sciences, it is important to recognize that many of us in engineering and sciences dangerously ignore liberal arts, leading to an appalling lack of writing and communication skills. While some technical majors deride College of Liberal Arts as the new home for failing IT students, I can say that it has been my experience that my liberal arts coursework has contributed as much or more to my career advancement as the bachelor's degree I earned in Chemistry.

Animals should appeal to higher humanity
It was a normal Saturday afternoon, cold and windy. I walked into the store and there he was -- big chocolate brown eyes, luxurious long gold hair and a body just wriggling with pent-up energy. His name was Felix, and he has since become my love. At only 11 months old, Felix had become an orphan and a ward of the state of Minnesota. His eyes were sad and confused.

No good deed escapes punishment in politics
She withdrew her candidacy for being Bush's secretary of labor because of allegations that she kept an illegal immigrant from Guatemala, Marta Mercado, in her home. Mercado had no money or food and was introduced to Chavez by a friend. Chavez agreed to take her in and gave her money, most of which was allegedly sent to her family in Guatemala. Mercado started taking English classes and even found a part-time job.
