Reports to: Managing Editor
Responsibilities
  • Hires, trains and supervises Sports Reporters and Interns.
  • Edits all sports stories for factual correctness, completeness, organization, style, spelling and libel.
  • Lays out the sports pages, coordinating with Photo Editor and Art Director.
  • Assigns and supervises coverage of stories.
  • Conducts employee evaluations and approves pay sheets for sports reporters and interns.
  • Oversees the travel budget which includes making travel arrangements and paying per diems.
  • Keeps current in job specific topics through trade journals, local newspapers and NCAA news.
  • May occasionally be called upon to write stories.
  • Attends weekly managers meetings.
  • Edits sports pages after production.

  • Qualifications
  • Must have an extensive knowledge of reporting and writing; having two years of experience at the Daily of equivalent newspaper experience.
  • Must possess managerial and leadership skills.
  • The ability to meet deadlines is essential.
  • Background in media law preferred.
  • Must be a University of Minnesota student.

  • Must have the ability to hear and speak English clearly.
  • Regularly requires the ability to visually analyze newspaper content.
  • Regularly requires verbal intelligence to convey ideas, knowledge and thorough critiques for editors and reporters.
  • Frequently requires repetitive finger motion and finger dexterity.
  • May occasionally need to lift up to ten pounds when working with materials in the newsroom.
  • May require reaching or stretching while working on the paper.
  • May be exposed to outdoor weather conditions while gathering information for the Daily.
