Hours: 30 HPW
Supervisor: Editor in Chief

Responsibilities
  • Manage newsroom.
  • Responsible for staffing duties including assist in hiring, scheduling and delegating of duties.
  • Ensures that employees receive organizational orientation and training; develops training programs and documentation.
  • Set and meet semesterly and yearly goals in concert with organizational goals; set and adhere to yearly budget.
  • Responsible for day-to-day operation of the newspaper and coverage plan.
  • Supervises Associate Editors, Sports, A&E, and Freelance, and works closely with the Multimedia department.
  • Attend to readers’ concerns.
  • Monitors wire services and other news media to ensure that no stories are missed.
  • General troubleshooter for the paper.
  • Serves as a motivator and morale keeper.
  • Leads weekly news meetings.
  • Works closely with Sales department to determine paper size and Production to ensure deadline is met.
  • Post content to the Daily’s website, including stories, blog posts, photos and polls.
  • Generally monitors website for content-related issues.
  • Assumes duties of EIC in EIC’s absence.

  • Qualifications
  • Two years of newspaper experience.
  • Must have previous supervisory experience and ability to motivate others.
  • Experience in writing and editing and current University affairs.
  • Excellent news judgment is a must.
  • Must be a University of Minnesota student.

  • Essential Functions
  • Must have the ability to hear and speak English clearly.
  • Regularly requires the ability to visually analyze newspaper content.
  • Regularly requires verbal intelligence to convey ideas, knowledge and thorough critiques for editors and reporters.
  • Regularly requires repetitive finger motion and finger dexterity.
  • May occasionally be exposed to outdoor weather conditions.
  • Must have motor coordination skills in order to drive a car when necessary.
