Responsibilities
Writes headlines and designs the newspaper’s most important pages.
Responsible for conceptualizing the design of the Daily’s front page, sports pages, weekly art and entertainment section, special news sections, and feature spreads, as well as creating those pages on deadline with page-design software.
Responsible for coordinating with the photo editor and graphics editor to obtain visually compelling content for each edition and for planning special sections and spreads well in advance.
Responsible for pursuing the Daily’s goal of being the nation’s best-designed student paper.
Supervises the copy desk editor responsible for designing the Daily’s inside news pages each night.
Writes all front page headlines and summarizes inside content for the front page rail.
Qualifications
At least one year of experience exercising news judgment at the Daily or similar publication.
Familiarity with the news-gathering process, journalism ethics, and the functions of all usual page elements, such as headlines, photos and text.
Extensive prior writing and design experience.
Demonstrated knowledge of standard newspaper design practices.
Experience with the Daily’s page-design software or a similar professional-caliber program.
Essential Functions
Must have the ability to hear and speak English clearly.
Regularly requires the ability to visually analyze newspaper content.
Regularly requires repetitive finger motion and finger dexterity when editing copy.
Requires the ability to read and understand English while editing copy.
Frequently requires verbal intelligence.
May occasionally need the ability to lift up to twenty-five pounds when working with materials in the newsroom.
Must be able to discriminate between colors and to distinguish bold and italicized words.
Must be able to drive to the printer if an emergency situation arises.
