Minnesota women’s tennis assistant coach Daria Panova is the next head coach at the University of Maryland.

She becomes the ninth head coach in the 35-year history of the Terrapin program, according to a press release from the university.

"I am pleased to welcome Daria as the newest member of the Terrapin coaching family," Kevin Anderson, director of athletics for Maryland, said in a release. "She has achieved success at the highest level of collegiate tennis as both a player and a coach. She has developed elite-level talent nationally and internationally and I am confident that she will do a tremendous job in leading our tennis program to new heights."

Panova said she is honored to join the team and thanked Anderson for the opportunity.

“I am eager to start working with the players,” she said. “I see a bright future for Maryland tennis and I am very excited to be a part of it."

Panova worked with former Gophers head coach Ty Thompson for the past five seasons, resulting in a 65-57 overall record an 18-32 conference record during her tenure. Last season she helped the squad to a 16-9 finish (5-6 Big Ten) and a final No. 39 ranking according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Minnesota began with a 12-1 start, the best in program history, and ended with the program’s first NCAA tournament appearance since 2003.

A native of Moscow, Panova was a two-time All-American and the 2003 Pac-10 Conference Player of the Year for the University of Oregon. She graduated with a degree in marketing before joining the coaching staff at Minnesota, where she also earned her master's degree in sport management.
