Police chief candidates to be announced throughout the week

The candidates will be revealed the day before their interviews.

Four finalists will make their cases for becoming the next University of Minnesota Police Chief at public forums this week.

The first candidate, Colleen Luna, is a senior commander in the St. Paul Police Department. Luna will be publically interviewed on Monday at 2 p.m. in the Best Buy Theater in the Northrop Auditorium.

The other three candidates will be announced the day before each of their interviews, which will run Monday through Thursday, according to an email from Vice President for University Services Pamela Wheelock.

During the interviews, candidates will answer a standard set of questions as well as questions from the audience, according to the email.

University Services Chief of Staff Leslie Krueger said it could take six to eight weeks before a finalist is chosen.

Current University Police Chief Greg Hestness will retire in June after 12 years with the department.

Hestness began his nearly 40-year career in law enforcement as a patrol officer for the Minneapolis Police Department.

In 2003, Hestness accepted a position as University Services’ assistant vice president for public safety, and shortly after, he accepted the police chief position.
