U names incoming chief of police

The search for a new leader of the University of Minnesota’s police department is over, University officials announced Tuesday.

Matthew Clark, who was a member of the Minneapolis Police Department since 1993 and took office as its assistant chief of police in 2012, will succeed University Police Chief Greg Hestness this summer.

“Matt brings more than two decades in law enforcement, comprehensive leadership experience and a unique perspective of the University of Minnesota,” Vice President for University Services Pam Wheelock said in a press release.

Clark, who graduated from Concordia University in St. Paul with a master’s in public administration and human services, will begin leading the Twin Cities’ 50-member campus police department on July 6.

University officials chose Clark from a pool of four finalists after the search for a new police chief began late last year.

Hestness began his time at the University as assistant vice president for public safety before accepting the police chief position soon after. He will retire in June after 12 years at the University and about 40 years in law enforcement.
