Each spring students from around Minnesota must decide where they're going to spend the next four years of their lives, and each geographical and social situation weighs in on this decision. In the College Bound series, the Minnesota Daily followed three students from three distinct areas. In the first video, Ryan Bergerson is preparing to leave his small, rural community in Madison. In the second, Edina High School Tierra Davis has her eyes set on big schools where she can get "lost in the crowd." In the third, standout student Bao Khang is working to set herself apart and win enough scholarships to leave her north Minneapolis home.

Against the grain

Ryan Bergerson, a senior at Lac qui Parle Valley High School in Madison, Minn., is the last of three siblings to leave his small-town family home. But first he must choose between the University of Minnesota and Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall.

A culture of college

Almost all of this year's graduating class at Edina High School will go on to pursue a four-year degree. Senior Tierra Davis is divided over staying close to home at the University of Minnesota or leaving the nest for the University of Wisconsin.

A fray in family ties

Bao Khang lives in north Minneapolis and plays an essential role in her family – in the Hmong culture, family is valued above all else. But she’s planning on leaving for college, and with the new-found independence so too comes the longing for home.
