Mannequins stained with blood red makeup littered the ground. It was all to prepare for potential disaster on the Light Rail Transit’s Green Line, should it come after the line opens this summer. Public safety authorities responded to a mock light rail derailment near the Stadium Village stop early Tuesday, in preparation for the Green Line’s June 14 debut. Paramedics from the city and the University of Minnesota hurried to the scene of the artificial crisis to help more than 100 volunteers who were faking broken limbs, gashes and other injuries. Bright red makeup made the injuries appear real while the actors performed specific parts, like walking with an injury or searching for a lost relative. University police aren’t accustomed to light rail emergencies, so the simulation offered an opportunity to develop those specific response skills, University spokesman Chuck Tombarge said last week. Parking and Transportation Services closed the Minnesota and Victory parking lots near TCF Bank Stadium on Tuesday and rerouted University buses to make room for the exercise. The drill gave authorities a chance to meet those they would work with in an actual emergency situation, officials said. “We all know each other now,” Metro Transit police captain Jim Franklin said last week. “You don’t want to meet your public safety partner for the first time during an incident.” By: Tyler Gieseke
Campus Wed, 19 Mar 2014 03:11:01 +0000 bbennett@mndaily.com 85734 at http://www.mndaily.com A toy story http://www.mndaily.com/multimedia/videos/2014/03/12/toy-story Assistant professor Barry Kudrowitz in the College of Design teaches 20 students about toy production.
