Whitney Tinjum has been added to the Gophers women's basketball program as a graduate transfer from Bradley University, the team announced on Monday. The 6-foot-1 inch forward will join the team for the 2016-17 season.Tinjum, a Stacy, Minn. native who played at Chisago Lakes High School, averaged 9.2 points and 4.2 rebounds in the 2015-16 season. She was the Braves second-leading scorer and started 16 of the 29 games she played in.

He is a three-star recruit according to Scout.com and also has an offer from Iowa State.

Milwaukee graduate transfer Akeem Springs committed to the Gophers on Friday, announcing his decision on Periscope.The 6-foot-4-inch, 210 pound guard will take the scholarship left open after Kevin Dorsey decided to transfer from the team. Springs will be eligible to play his final year immediately, and provide experience to the Gophers backcourt. The team's only other upperclassmen guard next season will be junior Nate Mason.
Rachel Banham's professional career is underway.The guard was taken fourth overall by the Connecticut Sun in the 2016 WNBA Draft on Thursday night, and was the first player not from the University of Connecticut off the board. The selection also carried a piece of historical symmetry, as former Gophers guard Lindsay Whalen was taken fourth overall by the Sun in 2004.Banham is the second Minnesota player to be taken with a top-five pick in the last two years, after center Amanda Zahui B. was selected No. 2 overall by the Tulsa Shock in 2015.

The Gophers also secured the top in-state recruit in last year’s class in linebacker Carter Coughlin. Coughlin committed to the team on March 12, 2015.
By Mike HendricksonGophers swimmer Kierra Smith is headed to the 2016 Olympics.Smith, who did not swim with Minnesota this year to train, will represent Team Canada after qualifying in the 100-meter breaststroke.She swam a time of 1:06.93 in the event at Canada’s Olympic Trials on Thursday in Toronto, a time that would have placed her fourth in the 2012 Olympics.Smith’s qualifying time is 14th in the world rankings for the 100 breaststroke as of Friday morning.
Gophers men's basketball head coach Richard Pitino posted a blog on Wednesday morning, hitting on many topics surrounding his team in the offseason.Minnesota's record has regressed each season under Pitino and the team finished 8-23 (2-16 Big Ten) last year, but he wrote next year's team should be the deepest and most talented he's had.
Former Minnesota quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Jim Zebrowski has been hired at Hamline, the school announced on Tuesday.Zebrowski was named the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for the Division III school, after five seasons with the Gophers. Minnesota head coach Tracy Claeys decided to not bring Zebrowski back after the 2015 season.
By Mike HendricksonSophomore point guard Kevin Dorsey will be leaving the Gophers and transferring to another school, head coach Richard Pitino announced Monday.Dorsey was suspended for the team’s final four games of the season, along with guards Nate Mason and Dupree McBrayer, for a violation of team rules. The Associated Press reported on Feb. 29 that a sexually explicit video was posted on Dorsey’s Twitter and Instagram accounts and later removed.
Gophers do-it-all junior Matt Fiedler was named the Co-Big Ten Baseball Player of the Week on Monday, after helping his team to a series victory against Iowa over the weekend.Fiedler went 7-13 at the plate in three games against the Hawkeyes, with two home runs and six RBIs. He also started the first game of the series on the mound and gave up one earned run in seven innings off of three hits. He also struck out six while walking four to move to 4-2 on the season.

Chen has won the award on the women's side four times at Minnesota, including last week.Minnesota men's team sent four divers to the NCAA Championships last weekend, tied for the most by a single school. The Gophers also sent four men's divers to the NCAA meet last season. Two of Chen's divers earned All-American honors at the meet this year in senior Manny Pollard and junior Matt Barnard.
Josie Buckingham and Danielle Garven have been granted their release from the Gophers women's basketball team and will seek to transfer, assistant director of athletics communications Justine Buerkle told the Minnesota Daily on Tuesday.Buckingham, a center from New Richmond, Ohio, appeared played only 27 minutes as a sophomore and scored one point with two blocks and five rebounds. Garven, a forward from Scarborough, Ontario, played 24 minutes as a freshman and scored seven points with seven turnovers.

By Mike HendricksonHudson Fasching singed an entry level contract with the Buffalo Sabres on Monday, forgoing his senior season at Minnesota.The forward led the Gophers in goals as a junior with 20 and finished with 46 in his three-year career.Fasching scored 94 points in 115 games at Minnesota, and set a career-high in points as a junior with 38. His career year caused the assistant captain to be named to the All-Big Ten Second Team this season.
The University of Minnesota's longest-tenured head coach will be sticking around a little longer.Interim athletics director Beth Goetz announced on Friday that Gophers baseball head coach John Anderson agreed to a contract extension through the 2021 season. Anderson is seven games into his 35th season with the program and has only two losing campaigns on his record.
