Lower weight wrestlers face early adversity

The wrestlers in Minnesota’s five lower weights have had to overcome a lot during the beginning of the season. Only one wrestler who has made a start in the Gophers’ 125, 133, 141, 149 and 157-weight classes is an upperclassman, and the team overall has started their dual schedule with matchups against No. 20 South Dakota State and No. 1 Oklahoma State. The group is also down a couple of key players.

Minnesota to host first dual since termination of head coach

The Gophers are wrestling for at the Sports Pavilion for the first time this season – and one notable face will be missing. Saturday will be their first dual at home since 1986 without former head coach J Robinson at the helm. Interim head coach Brandon Eggum, who has been on the staff since 2001, said the team has adjusted well without Robinson in the first two opens of the season.

U athletics department knew of drug problem months before taking action

Evidence suggests several University of Minnesota Athletics Department administrators and staff members knew of at least one University of Minnesota wrestler using and selling drugs as early as December 2015 — exactly four months before an anonymous wrestler informed police of a drug ring within the team, documents obtained by the Minnesota Daily through a data request reveal. Report details 'serious misconduct' with J Robinson's handling of team's drug problem

Former University of Minnesota wrestling team head coach J Robinson tried to shield Minnesota wrestlers allegedly involved in a drug ring from punishment, while obstructing investigations of the claims, a University investigation has found. The thirty one-page, partially redacted report, released Wednesday, was launched after allegations surfaced that Robinson sought to internally handle a drug use and distribution ring among wrestlers that formed early this year.

Eggum named wrestling head coach

The University of Minnesota has named Brandon Eggum the acting head coach of the Gophers wrestling team as the school continues its investigation of J Robinson.

No charges for Robinson, wrestlers

No charges will be filed against University of Minnesota wrestlers involved in the alleged sale and use of Xanax, an anti-anxiety drug. In addition, the team’s head coach, J Robinson, will not face charges for attempting to resolve the issue internally.   While the announcement signals an end to a police investigation of alleged drug sales, the coach remains under scrutiny from an internal investigation following claims that he obstructed the investigation.
