Gophers finish eighth at championships

After placing third in the Big Ten tournament and entering the NCAA championships as the fourth-ranked team in the nation, the Gophers’ expectations were high. They were following a three-year run of placing in the top three. But this year, they took eighth. Minnesota only scored 59.5 points at the 2015 NCAA championship over the weekend, after finishing with 104 points last year. The Gophers finished 42.5 points behind first-place Ohio State.

Storley paves his legacy at Minnesota

Freshmen who come to Minnesota rarely ever compete as a true freshman, let alone have a starting spot immediately after their arrival. But Logan Storley wanted the chance to wrestle for the team as soon as he made it to campus four years ago. “Coming in, [Storley] said immediately, ‘I want to wrestle as a true freshman,’” head assistant coach Brandon Eggum said. “He competed well in the [training] room against guys that were very successful. You could just tell that he is ready to go.”

Minnesota finishes Big Tens in third

The Gophers left the Big Ten championships on Sunday with a third-place finish and a senior earning a title — strikingly similar results to last year’s championship. Only this time the Gophers relied on their performance in the 133-pound weight class with redshirt senior Chris Dardanes taking home the title. Dardanes is one of seven Minnesota wrestlers who earned an automatic bid to the NCAA championships. Head assistant coach Brandon Eggum said the team could qualify even more wrestlers, depending on at-large bids.

Minnesota heads to Big Tens

The Gophers know regular season success doesn’t necessarily guarantee postseason success. Despite that, they’ll try building off a successful regular season as they head to Columbus, Ohio, to compete in the Big Ten championships. Minnesota finished 12-3 overall in dual meets while being ranked No. 5 in the nation as a team. Despite these accolades, head assistant coach Brandon Eggum said his team has to forget about what it has accomplished in the regular season. “Everything starts fresh from here on out,” Eggum said.

Gophers fall in NWCA quarterfinals

It was supposed to be a run for a fourth-consecutive NWCA title. But the No. 4 Gophers fell to No. 5 Cornell in the quarterfinal match. The 19-17 loss came after Minnesota won 11 consecutive matches at the NWCA National Duals. Head assistant coach Brandon Eggum said he knew Cornell would be tough going into the meet. “We figured that a couple matches could’ve been swing matches,” Eggum said. “If you win them, you could win [the meet] comfortably.”

True freshman Lizak steps up

Injuries and weight management issues gave a freshman wrestler an opportunity to compete at the varsity level. Ethan Lizak, the Gophers’ 125-pounder, was thrust into competing against top-ranked opponents in just the 10th dual meet of the season — and his first of the kind.
