Gophers wrestling place fourth in Cliff Keen Invitational in Vegas

Minnesota and 34 other teams competed in the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas Friday and Saturday, and the Gophers placed fourth overall. Redshirt senior Brett Pfarr at 197 and redshirt junior Jake Short at 157 were the two title winners for the Gophers. The fourth-place finish comes a week after No. 10 Minnesota lost 34-3 to No. 1 Oklahoma State. “I thought the team ... had some good improvements over the last couple of weeks,” said interim head coach Brandon Eggum.

Lower weight wrestlers face early adversity

The wrestlers in Minnesota’s five lower weights have had to overcome a lot during the beginning of the season. Only one wrestler who has made a start in the Gophers’ 125, 133, 141, 149 and 157-weight classes is an upperclassman, and the team overall has started their dual schedule with matchups against No. 20 South Dakota State and No. 1 Oklahoma State. The group is also down a couple of key players.
