Column: It was a good year overall for the Gophers, ya feel me?

For graduating seniors, this past year was a revelation — a loud and collective exhale of “about time,” four years overdue.

For freshmen finishing their first year on campus, it was a precedent that’ll be difficult to eclipse moving forward.

And for every student on campus, it was a heck of a year to be a Gophers fan — the best in recent memory.

There wasn’t a national championship this year like there was in 2012 and 2013 — both hockey teams fell short in their respective national championship games, and the wrestling team finished second to rival Penn State — but not many schools can say it had three teams finish as runner-ups.

And the list of this year’s athletics accomplishments goes on.

There’s still a lot of the season left, but it’s plausible that the softball team will end up at the Women’s College World Series. It just finished one of its best regular seasons in program history, spending the majority of the year ranked in the top 25.

The Gophers men’s golf team, led by star freshman Jose Mendez, just won the Big Ten to earn a place in the NCAA tournament.

The women’s team was named to the NCAA tournament field, too, as were the volleyball and soccer teams during the fall semester.

The list goes on, as it truly was a special year for most of the sports teams across campus.

Minnesota’s men’s basketball team didn’t make the NCAA tournament, but it made the most of its NIT selection, winning the whole kit and caboodle. That win proved first-year head coach Richard Pitino has the ship headed in the right direction. He has his sights set on bigger and better things for the program.

Pitino’s first year was Jerry Kill’s third, and in Year Three, football is finally relevant on campus again. Minnesota won eight games, rattled off its first four-game Big Ten winning streak since the 1970s and beat traditional powerhouse Nebraska for the first time in 50 years.

It’s unclear whether the football team will build on its strong season, but it was nice to see some culture and atmosphere at TCF Bank Stadium.

That atmosphere, in turn, spread across the rest of the campus. And Gophers fans had something to cheer for all year long.

This is my last column ever for the Minnesota Daily.

That said, I had a helluva time this year writing about the events every student on campus got to enjoy.

Ya feel me?
