Minnesota postpones first game of the year

The Gophers also had to postpone their game against St. John’s last year.

The Gophers baseball team will postpone its first home game of the year because of weather issues, the team announced Monday.

Minnesota was originally scheduled to play St. John’s at Siebert Field on Wednesday at 3:05 p.m.

The Gophers’ game against St. John’s last season was also postponed. Minnesota is scheduled to play Michigan State this weekend, but that series, too, might also face postponement.

The Gophers didn’t play last year’s series against Michigan State because of a snowstorm in April.

This is the first postponement of the season for the program. Minnesota had seven games either postponed or canceled last year because of weather conditions.

The Gophers have already experienced some trouble with the weather this year.

Minnesota’s series last week — on the road against Northwestern — was moved from Evanston, Ill., to St. Charles, Mo., because of weather conditions.

Gophers head coach John Anderson is familiar with this type of postponement. He said the team needs be flexible in times like this.

“We try to prepare and get ready whenever the next opportunity is going to be, and you have to be flexible,” Anderson said. “If you’re not willing to be flexible, this is not a place to play or coach, because it seems like you make plans and all you do is change your plans.”
