After Illinois' game Saturday at Michigan, a beaten and bruised Illini team can now add "belittled" to the list. A 74-yard punt return by the Wolverines' Steve Breaston was the focal point of the game's highlights, and the ESPN analysts took great pleasure in counting the Illini's missed tackles. They said it looked like the tacklers were quitting.

Tony Patterson was not about to say anything, but the frustration was palpable. Minnesota football coach Glen Mason could sense it brewing in his fifth-year wide receiver without ever hearing a word. So Mason approached Patterson before practice last week with a few words of encouragement.

Once again, Minnesota football coach Glen Mason feels his defense put in three solid quarters of football last weekend. And once again, the other quarter played a paramount role in sinking the team. The Gophers trailed 17-0 after the first quarter, and the three-score deficit would prove insurmountable by game's end in a 44-38 loss to Michigan State on Saturday.

Even when his future appeared as though it couldn't get any bleaker, Jeff Smoker maintained a quiet confidence in himself. Surrounded by a Michigan State football program caught up in negative distractions and plagued by substance abuse problems that threatened his own career, the Spartans' quarterback took comfort in a single, simple thought.

Minnesota football coach Glen Mason began to notice the professional scouts at practice staying longer than usual about a month ago. He came to learn they were staying to watch one of his running backs - but not for his running ability. They were watching Thomas Tapeh block.

In the moments following the Gophers' 38-35 loss to Michigan last Friday night, an emotional Asad Abdul-Khaliq predicted the tears probably would not stop until Tuesday. After three days to reflect and collect themselves, Tuesday arrived without a tear in sight. Instead, Minnesota football players appeared infused with newfound enthusiasm that their team still possesses the talent and moxy to achieve all its preseason goals, beginning with a win Saturday against 15th-ranked Michigan State.

Minnesota football defensive tackle Darrell Reid found himself looking back on several occasions on Friday. The junior saw numerous screen passes lofted over his defensive line and into the hands of Michigan tailback Chris Perry. Perry racked up 122 yards receiving on 11 screen passes, and the 25th-ranked Gophers (6-1, 2-1 Big Ten) appeared helpless to stop him as the Wolverines recovered from a 28-7 deficit to win 38-35.

It was an innocent mistake. Early in the second quarter of Minnesota's Big Ten bout against Michigan on Friday night, the sound technicians at the Metrodome accidentally followed a Gophers first down by playing the Vikings' trademark blowhorn over the stadium's public address system.

Heisman Trophy candidate and tailback Chris Perry caused problems for the Minnesota defense Friday night. But the Gophers couldn't have expected Perry to do so much of the damage as a pass receiver. Perry had 207 yards of total offense, including 11 catches for 122 yards and a touchdown on screen passes.

When Minnesota senior tailback Thomas Tapeh dove into the end zone with less than a minute to go in the third quarter Friday night, Michigan coach Lloyd Carr knew his stagnant offense needed a change of pace - literally. The 25th-ranked Gophers (6-1, 2-1 Big Ten) had their biggest lead of the game at 28-7. The 17th-ranked Wolverines (5-2, 2-1) had less than 16 minutes to erase it.

Prior to his team's matchup with Oregon on Sept. 20, Michigan senior tailback Chris Perry led the nation in rushing for a fifth-ranked team with a legitimate shot to unseat Ohio State as Big Ten, or even national, champions. Then the Ducks found a way to completely shut down the Wolverines' running attack in a 31-27 win, dashing Michigan's national championship aspirations in the process.
