With 2:26 remaining in its game against Michigan State, Minnesota's men's basketball team had five seniors on the floor " all with 10 points apiece. It was a heartwarming moment for a group of seniors that has had more than its fair share of disappointment this season.

It's been a week and a half of firsts for Minnesota's men's basketball. The Gophers picked up their first Big Ten win Jan. 29 against Indiana by a score of 61-42. On Wednesday, they picked up their first Big Ten road win against Penn State, 77-66.

This season can be described as hit or miss for Minnesota's men's basketball team. But two walk-ons have become quite a hit as of late. Senior forward Zach Puchtel and freshman guard Jamal Abu-Shamala both walked onto the squad this year and have made their presence felt as of late.

It wasn't that Minnesota's men's basketball team couldn't defend the three. It was that Ohio State's Je'Kel Foster couldn't miss a three. After missing the first shot of the game " a three-pointer " the senior guard poured in a career-high 25 points, hitting his next seven three-point attempts to lead the Buckeyes to a 67-53 win over the Gophers.

Minnesota's men's basketball team has momentum from something it hasn't experienced in longer than a month " a win. After stymieing then-13th-ranked Indiana 61-42 on Sunday, the Gophers travel to Columbus, Ohio, to take on No. 20 Ohio State at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Shutting down Indiana seemed improbable with Indiana's offense, and Minnesota's men's basketball's lack of it. Yet a lineup switch that brought junior Zach Puchtel into the starting lineup gave the Gophers uncertainty against Indiana, and the change was one that may have been the key to a big upset over the Hoosiers on Sunday at Williams Arena.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. " Every time Minnesota's men's basketball team would pull close to Illinois in Wednesday night's game, the eighth-ranked Illini countered with a big play to take back the momentum. It became obvious why Illinois (18-2, 4-2 Big Ten) has won 32 consecutive home games " a new school record " after its 77-53 victory over the Gophers.

With arguably the hardest two-week stretch of the season beginning tonight, Minnesota's men's basketball team will start that stretch with the defending conference champions. The Gophers (9-7, 0-5 Big Ten) travel to Champaign, Ill., to take on No. 8 Illinois, a team that has proved to be nearly unbeatable at home.

While a winless Big Ten season speaks for itself, the numbers truly reflect why Minnesota's men's basketball team is struggling this season. The Gophers were 10th or worse in seven major Big Ten statistical categories before their game Saturday against Michigan.
