Men’s golf

The Gophers men’s golf team finished the Big Ten Championships tied for third place with Northwestern at Forest Akers West Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich.
Minnesota shot a 36-over 1188. Indiana won the title at 25-over 1177, three shots ahead of Ohio State.
Junior Adam Dooley posted the Gophers’ low score, finishing in seventh place with a 5-over 293. Ohio State’s Ryan Armour won the individual title with a 1-under 287. He was the only golfer in the field to break par for the tournament.
Gophers freshman James McLean took home Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors and the Les Bolstad Award, given to the player with the lowest season stroke average in the conference. McLean finished in ninth place with an 8-over 296.
Other Gopher finishers were senior Rob Kerr in 15th place, Jeff Barney in 23rd place and Bill Thompson in 34th place.
The next stop for the Gophers will be the NCAA Central Regional in San Antonio on May 14-16.
Gophers women finish 17th
The Gophers women’s golf team ended its 1997-98 campaign with a 17th place finish in the NCAA Eastern Regional in Durham, N.C. Teams must finish eighth or higher in the regional to advance to the finals.
Minnesota shot a 67-over 943 to finish 27 strokes behind eighth-place Auburn. Georgia won the regional title with a 6-over 882.
Amy Dahle ended her Gophers career tied with a 53rd place finish (76-84-75 235) on Duke University’s par 73 course. Melanie Lepp tied with Dahle at 235, while Keri Sawvell, Michelle Ballou and Donna Boom finished the year in 58th, 83rd and 100th place, respectively.
Reilley Rankin of Georgia won the individual regional title.
