Minnesota finishes seventh in Arizona

The Gophers placed seventh at the Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational, which concluded on Sunday.

Minnesota shot an 866 in the tournament, its second-lowest 54-hole score of the season. Iowa State won the event with a score of 832.

“We played better at times in comparison to even our San Diego tournament,” head coach John Carlson said. “It was more of a whole team effort this week, and I was proud of that. We were a little bit sloppy at the finish today. I didn’t think our last nine holes went very well. We gave away a lot of shots.”

Freshman Peter Jones finished with the lowest score on the team in his second tournament in the lineup. He tied for 27th place with an individual score of 216.

“I hadn’t seen the course before. I didn’t get time to play a practice round because we came down Friday,” Jones said. “I know that coach always talks about just making good decisions on the golf course, and I did that.”

Junior Justin Doeden finished a stroke behind Jones and tied for 29th place.

The Gophers’ lowest team score came in the second round with a 283, and the team’s highest score was a 296 in the third round.

“We continue to make mistakes in our short game,” Carlson said. “We’ve been focusing so much on ball striking. Our practices are going to be much heavier focused on short-game.”
