With a roster full of fresh faces, Minnesota women's tennis coach Tyler Thomson said he was looking to evaluate his overhauled rosters' competitive nature and composure this weekend at the Gopher Invitational. And with Gophers players combining to play 65 matches in three days, Thomson had more than enough time to see what his roster was made of during the nine-team tournament at Baseline Tennis Center. For the weekend, Minnesota went 25-12 in singles action, while their seven doubles teams went 15-13 collectively.

With the addition of seven new players to accompany seven returning players, Minnesota's women's tennis team will rely on many unfamiliar faces to return the Gophers to the upper echelon of the Big Ten this spring. But first, Minnesota will have to integrate the old with the new this fall, which coach Tyler Thomson said already has begun during the first week and a half of practice.

It won't be easy replacing the Minnesota men's tennis team's all-time winningest coach, but someone has to do it. That someone is Geoff Young, former men's tennis coach at the University of Denver, who was hired as the Gophers' new head coach Tuesday. In six years with the Pioneers, Young compiled a 71-68 record and led the team to a school-best fourth place finish in the Sun Belt conference last season.

But in its final weekend of Big Ten competition, the Gophers (5-17, 2-8 Big Ten) pulled out all the stops for their second conference win of the season. Minnesota handled Illinois (7-14, 2-8 Big Ten) 5-2 on Saturday at Baseline Tennis Center.

Minnesota's men's tennis team has high aspirations for its last weekend of the Big Ten regular season. The 37th-ranked Gophers (12-10, 6-2 Big Ten) will head to Champaign, Ill., on Saturday to take on No. 5 Illinois (18-5, 7-1 Big Ten) and West Lafayette, Ind., to take on Purdue (7-12, 2-6 Big Ten) on Sunday afternoon. It was with great surprise that Minnesota's men's tennis team found out coach David Geatz will be stepping down at season's end. But now that the initial shock has passed, the Gophers want to send Geatz and assistant coach Adam Cohen out on the right note.

Minnesota's men's tennis team has played the upset card all season long. Saturday, the 38th-ranked Gophers got a taste of their own medicine. Minnesota (12-10, 6-2 Big Ten) was upended 5-2 Saturday afternoon by 64th-ranked Indiana (15-8, 4-4 Big Ten).

Just days after learning coach David Geatz will step down at season's end, Minnesota's men's tennis team will try to shift its focus back to the Big Ten standings this weekend. The Gophers (11-9, 5-1 Big Ten) will host Penn State (13-3, 3-3 Big Ten) at 6:30 tonight and Indiana (13-8, 2-4 Big Ten) at noon Saturday.

Minnesota men's tennis coach David Geatz will resign at the end of the season, athletics director Joel Maturi announced Monday. Geatz is in his 18th season as the Gophers coach. Minnesota is 11-9 this season. "I just decided it was time to do something else," Geatz said. "I'm going to finish out the year. I feel I owe it to the guys on the team."
