A sixth-place finish at the 2005 Big Ten Championships left room for improvement for the Minnesota's women's swimming and diving team. The Gophers weren't about to fall into the depths of the Big Ten, nor were they going to tread water with another middle-of-the-pack finish. Instead, the 23rd-ranked Gophers followed a second place finish at the ...

For the past two years, Minnesota's men's swimming and diving team has been able to say it was the best in the Big Ten by showing off a Big Ten title. Not anymore. Indiana pulled away early and the Gophers were unable to make up the necessary ground, finishing second with 652 points, 107.5 points behind the Hoosiers.

As the water evaporated from the swimmers after conference swimming and diving championships, teams already had begun preparing individuals for the NCAA Championships. As was the case for Minnesota's men's swimming and diving team. The Gophers automatically qualified three of their five relay teams for the NCAA Championships in Atlanta, which are March 23 to 25, and their other two relay teams qualified for NCAA consideration with their times.

Last year Minnesota’s swimming and diving team lost two very important numbers — 23 and 13. And those aren’t numbers etched into swimmers’ Speedos; they represent how many times former Gophers swimmers Terry Silkaitis and Justin Mortimer were named All-Americans, respectively.

The competition at this weekend's Minnesota Challenge won't provide much of a challenge to Minnesota's men's swimming and diving team. Instead, the eighth-ranked Gophers will create their own challenge " improving on things they've seemed to have no trouble with this season.

A top-notch swimming program and a warm climate " these are the top two decision-making factors for most prospective collegiate swimmers across the globe. Luckily for Minnesota's women's swimming and diving team, the second isn't that important to a pair of invaluable distance swimmers.

Hosting Purdue and Wisconsin for a triple dual at the University Aquatic Center this weekend, Minnesota's swimming and diving team staked their claim as the best team in the Big Ten. And that message was loud and clear through the relay events. The eighth-ranked Gophers began the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay and closed out the meet with a 1-2 finish in the 400 freestyle relay.
