One week is all that is left for Minnesota’s women’s track and field team to prepare for the Big Ten Championships in Wisconsin. That final preparation will be Saturday against some less formidable Division II and III competition at the University Field House.

She might as well be certified in record breaking. That is the case for Minnesota women's track and field freshman Heather Dorniden. Her résumé in the past 10 days alone: 400-meter school record, 800-meter school record, 4-by-400-meter relay school record squad member, and 800-meter distance medley relay school record squad member.

Breaking school records has lifted Minnesota's women's track and field team into the national spotlight with Big Ten Athletes of the Week and a top-25 ranking. But that praise will not change the goals for the 18th-ranked Gophers for the Iowa State Classic this weekend in Ames, Iowa.

The connections between the Twin Cities and La Crosse, Wis., go further than the mighty Mississippi River. Minnesota women's track and field coach Gary Wilson and junior distance runner Emily Brown illustrate this. That's because Brown's high school coach at West Allis, Wis., Doug Jordan, ran for coach Wilson at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Minnesota's women's track and field team hasn't faced the type of competition it will see at the Big Ten meet. That will change this weekend when the Gophers head to South Bend, Ind., for the Meyo Invitational on Saturday and Sunday where, according to coach Gary Wilson, they will see some of the nations best track programs.

Coaches say early season indoor track and field meets are supposed to be an exhibition before the Big Ten meet, but what Minnesota's men's team did at the Jack Johnson Classic on Saturday was turn it into a record-breaking track and field meet. The Gophers broke two meet records with the 600-meter dash and the 3,000.

Minnesota's men's and women's track and field teams have sent competitors to the NCAA Midwest Regional before, and a good number have gone knowing they'd likely still qualify for NCAAs even if they performed poorly.
