Eye on Sochi: Team USA takes silver

The U.S. women’s hockey team lost to Canada 3-2 in overtime in Thursday’s gold-medal game.

Team USA took home the silver medal with the loss, and Switzerland won the bronze.

The United States led 2-0 late in the third period, but Canada scored at 56:34 to pull within one goal.

Team Canada pulled its goalie, and the Americans nearly sealed the gold medal with an empty-net goal. That chance came and went late in the game when the puck slid across the ice and collided with the post.

The Canadians tied the game moments later on a shot from Marie-Philip Poulin with 55 seconds left in the third period.

In overtime, after a few of penalties, Poulin again played hero for Canada with the game-winning goal.

U.S. men’s team doesn’t medal

Team USA failed to medal after losing to Canada in the semifinals and to Finland in the bronze-medal game.

The Americans lost to Canada 1-0 on Friday.

Jamie Benn, a forward with the NHL’s Dallas Stars, scored the game’s lone goal for Canada.

A day later, the Americans lost 5-0 to Finland.

Canada beat Sweden 3-0 in the gold-medal game for the country’s second-straight gold medal.

The International Ice Hockey Federation named former Gophers forward Phil Kessel, who competed for Team USA, the tournament’s top forward.
