Something about playing St. Cloud State seems to bring out the best in the Gophers.

Minnesota has outscored the Huskies 36-2 so far this season after a weekend sweep in St. Cloud, with a 7-0 victory Friday and a 4-2 victorySaturday

“Certainly this year we’ve had their number,” head coach Brad Frost said. “Sometimes you just have those matchups in a given year where
players really like playing against those teams, and that might be the case this year.”

Friday’s victory was the 279th of Frost’s career, moving him past predecessor Laura Halldorson for the most victories in program history. He was given the game puck by the team after the game to commemorate the accomplishment.

“It was really exciting. Obviously the foundation that Laura Halldorson had set was a lot to live up to, but being around it for so long, [Frost] has carried her tradition on and has even improved it,” junior forward Dani Cameranesi said.

The No. 3 Gophers (22-3, 17-3 WCHA) wasted no time Friday skating past St. Cloud. Senior captain Hannah Brandt scored first for Minnesota 3:25 into the first period after not playing last weekend due to a lingering injury.

Minnesota added three more goals in the first, two coming from freshman forward Sarah Potomak, to go up 4-0 in the first 20 minutes.

Junior defenseman Kelsey Cline and Cameranesi added two goals in the second period, and junior forward Kate Schipper made the final goal of the night for the dominating victory.

Senior goaltender Amanda Leveille recorded 18 saves in her 27th career shutout, and first-line forwards Brandt, Potomak and Cameranesi combined for 12 points in the victory.

The Gophers controlled the game again on Saturday, with senior defenseman Milica McMillen scoring less than five minutes into the game on the power play.

Sophomore forward Cara Piazza added another power-play goal toward the end of the first to give Minnesota a 2-0 lead.

Freshman forward Taylor Williamson added to the Gophers’ lead in the second, but early in the third, St. Cloud forward Lauren Hespenheide spoiled the shutout.

It was the first time the Huskies scored in the team’s five meetings this season.

The two teams traded power-play goals to end the third, and the Gophers came away with a 4-2 victory, the team’s sixth in a row.

Six of Minnesota’s 11 goals over the weekend came in the first period.

“I think the biggest thing with [St. Cloud] is that we get goals early, and that takes a lot out of them,” Brandt said. “I think we’ve had that mental advantage against them now that we haven’t always been successful with this year.”
