The Minnesota men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Drake Relays, Longhorn Invitational, and other meets over the weekend, and it was Taylor Wiebke on the women’s team who stood out the most. Competing at the Longhorn Invitational on Saturday, Wiebke surprised herself by winning the high jump with a new program record 1.85 meters.
Many athletes have something — or someone — that motivates and inspires them. For Emerald Egwim, it is her faith in God. Egwim, a member of the Minnesota women’s track and field team, said her faith is what made her who she is in all aspects of life — and doing the little things is what helps her improve as an athlete and person.
The decathlon record wasn’t safe at Mt. SAC Multi-Events and Relays. A record that was previously set in 2012 by Jack Szmanda was eclipsed by Luca Wieland over the weekend. Wieland scored 8,201 points to claim Szmanda’s record, when he scored 7,862.
The women’s track and field team improved some personal bests and set program records at the Sun Angel Classic during the weekend. Senior Kimberly Golding led the way winning the 100-meter hurdles. Her time of 13.29 just beat her teammate junior Emma Spagnola, who ran it in 13.36.
Maryland dashed Minnesota’s hopes of continuing on in the Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament and beat the Gophers 92-80 on Friday. Gadiva Hubbard put in a 28-point performance for a career high.
In a shootout between Minnesota’s Carlie Wagner and Penn State’s Teniya Page, it was Wagner who pushed Minnesota to a 70-64 win and onto the next round of the Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament.
When any team graduates a player of Rachel Banham’s level, the question becomes who is going to step into that role. This season, Carlie Wagner answered the call.
In its last game of the regular season, Minnesota suffered a big loss to then-No. 2 Maryland. The Gophers were outplayed in multiple key areas in the 93-60 defeat on Sunday. Head coach Marlene Stollings previously said they needed to play great defense to compete with the Terrapins. The Gophers forced 21 turnovers, a season high for Maryland, but it wasn’t enough. Guard Kenisha Bell was satisfied with how they got stops on defense, but they were missing the rebound piece.
Minnesota’s track and field teams both finished top five at the Big Ten Championships. The meet was highlighted by Derek Wiebke and Madeline Strandemo both winning titles in the mile in their respective races. Strandemo was extra excited about her win after watching Wiebke win the men’s race. “I saw that race happen, and we both got third last year,” Strandemo said.
Minnesota failed to defend its court in the last home game of the season as the Gophers fell to Purdue 67-54. The final home game was also senior night, the celebration of the four seniors on Minnesota’s roster.
