Mbakwe continues career abroad

After former Gophers star Trevor Mbakwe broke onto the college basketball scene in 2010, all signs were pointing towards a legitimate chance at making a career in the NBA. But after tearing his ACL only seven games into his senior campaign, which caused him to miss the rest of the season, those NBA goals quickly faded. And although he was granted a medical redshirt and a sixth year of eligibility, Mbakwe never truly returned to his 2010 form âÄì at least as a member of the Gophers. However, the St. Paul, Minn., native didnâÄôt let his injuries derail his post-college basketball dreams.

Carr bounces back to the wrestling mat

Before wrestling for a top-ranked program like Minnesota was even a possibility, redshirt freshman Colin Carr was prepared for the harsh reality that he may never wrestle again.

Four Gophers selected in NWHL Draft

Minnesota forward Hannah Brandt was selected second overall in the inaugural National Women’s Hockey League draft Saturday by the Connecticut Whale.

Ex-Gophers give back

Dick McCullough played a key part in bringing the Gophers most recent baseball national championship back to Minneapolis âÄì his triple in the title game gave Minnesota a lead it would never surrender. The only problem is, the most recent national championship is not very recent at all. In fact, McCulloughâÄôs heroics occurred over 50 years ago in the 1964 College World Series. Now, the former Gophers shortstop has determined that the fifty-plus year drought has gone on long enough.

Two Gophers named All-Americans

Two Gophers returned from last weekâÄôs NCAA Track and Field Championships as All-Americans âÄì and not one of them was named Luca Wieland. The sophomore, who took home the Big Ten and national title in the heptathlon and earned the Big Ten crown in the decathlon earlier this year, withdrew from the outdoor championships after aggravating a leg injury during warm-ups. For the Gophers that did compete, juniors Gian Ferretti and Goaner Deng both placed well enough in the hammer throw and 800-meter run respectively to earn All-American status.
