U uses tuition, state funds to pay legal fees associated with faculty union push

The University of Minnesota has spent more than $500,000 of state taxpayer and tuition money in legal fees as it battles faculty unionization advocates in court. Records obtained by the Minnesota Public Interest Research Group through a public records request show the money — nearly $515,000 from a University fund of tuition and state money — was used to hire the law firm Fredrikson & Byron as the school clashed with faculty union supporters to determine what faculty positions could be included in the union vote.


Four Gophers football players involved in MPD case

The Minneapolis Police Department is investigating a case involving four suspended Gophers football players. Players KiAnte Hardin, Ray Buford, Dior Johnson and Tamarion Johnson are mentioned in an unspecified case, said department spokesman Corey Schmidt.


Protesters call for boycott of Varsity Theater, Loring Pasta Bar

About 40 demonstrators lined the sidewalk between the Varsity Theater and the Loring Pasta Bar Saturday, quietly holding signs and talking with passersby. The protest was meant to educate the campus community of the sexual abuse allegations against the businesses’ owner, Jason McLean, said the organizer, Sarah Super.


Gophers basketball player arrested on suspicion of sexual assault

A University of Minnesota men’s basketball player was arrested Sunday on suspicion of sexual assault and is being held in Hennepin County Jail. Reggie Lynch was arrested by officers from the University of Minnesota Police Department Sunday afternoon on suspicion of criminal sexual conduct at his apartment. As of Monday afternoon, Lynch had yet to be formally charged and was being held without bail in Hennepin County Jail, according to county records.


Veteran admin to retire in June
