The Gophers men’s cross country team will look to improve upon its disappointing fourth-place finish in its opening event last weekend when it travels to Provo, Utah, for the Autumn Classic this Friday.

Having its top runners in the lineup should help.

“I look forward to, and I know the guys looks forward to, their first competition,” head coach Steve Plasencia said. “We have some guys who are Division-I savvy, and we’re excited to put that group of 10 [runners] together.”

The women’s cross country season is only two events in, but junior Laura Docherty has established herself as the Gophers’ top runner after winning both of them.

Granted, one race was an intrasquad meet, which she ran against her Gophers teammates, and the second was the Oz Memorial against second-tier opponents last weekend.

But Docherty improved her Oz time by more than a minute from last year, finishing the six-kilometer race in 21 minutes, 31 seconds.

Out of the top 20 finishers in the women’s cross country race at the Oz Memorial last Friday, only three did not don maroon and gold.

The Gophers produced the top 11 finishers and 17 of the top 20 in the race held Friday at Les Bolstad Golf Course.

“They came in and put the pedal to the metal and focused and ran well,” head coach Gary Wilson said.

Junior Laura Docherty finished first with a time of 21 minutes, 31 seconds in the six-kilometer race, which was run in cool, windy conditions.

The men’s and women’s cross country teams will begin their respective seasons Friday at home by running at the familiar Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, Minn.

The Oz Memorial, which starts at 4:30 p.m., will feature a spattering of runners from different schools around Minnesota. The Gophers have dominated the race in the past.

The run will be the first official contest for head coach Gary Wilson’s team, although the group did hold an intrasquad race last weekend.

The Gophers men’s cross country team wrapped up its season Monday at the NCAA championships in Terre Haute, Ind., with a 16th-place finish in the 31-team field.

Hassan Mead earned the fourth All-American honor of his cross country career by finishing 34th, in 30 minutes, 2 seconds.

“I think both of us would have been happier if he was a little higher,” men’s head coach Steve Plasencia said. “He got out a little bit [further] back than we would have envisioned and from that point on, he pretty much stayed in that position.

It’s been a long, obstacle-ridden season for the Gophers men’s and women’s cross country teams, but both groups’ seasons will conclude Monday at the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind.

Minnesota is familiar with Indiana State’s course, as it has made an appearance in the national meet in 14 of the last 16 seasons. That experience should help the team Monday.

“We’ve been there so many times, so there are no surprises to anybody in regard to what the course is like,” men’s head coach Steve Plasencia said. He added that historically the course runs faster than others.

All-American Hassan Mead will conclude his illustrious cross country career at the University of Minnesota on Monday at the NCAA Championships.

His journey, however, started more than 8,000 miles from the Twin Cities.

Mead was born in Somalia and spent the first 11 years of his life there before immigrating to Minneapolis in 2000.

Upon his arrival, Mead said he had difficulty adapting to the bitter cold winter and went to live with his uncle on the West Coast.

It’s not often the most talented athlete on a team’s roster has to wait until their final year of eligibility to earn a scholarship.

Gophers cross country All-American Steph Price is a part of that minority.

Price didn’t run cross country until her senior season of high school, and she was a walk-on in her first season with Minnesota in 2008. Three years later, she is the team’s top runner, and fresh off a sixth-place finish at the NCAA midwest regional.

She said her success with the Gophers has been more than she could have ever dreamed.

It was perhaps more dramatic than the Gophers men’s and women’s cross country teams wanted it, but both teams are going to the NCAA championships on at-large bids.

The men’s team finished fourth at the NCAA midwest regional on Saturday in DeKalb, Ill., despite a first-place finish by All-American Hassan Mead.

On Wednesday, men’s head coach Steve Plasencia told the Minnesota Daily he thought a third-place finish would almost guarantee his team an at-large bid for the NCAA championships on Nov. 21.

The Gophers men’s cross country team will make its first-ever trip to DeKalb, Ill., this weekend to compete in the NCAA Midwest Regional.

No. 18 Minnesota placed third at the Big Ten championships two weekends ago behind 13-time defending champion and top-ranked Wisconsin and No. 7 Indiana.

The Gophers’ level of competition will not change in this weekend at the regional meet.
