The first rotation on rings was the only event Josh Wokurka successfully completed Saturday in Iowa City, Iowa, in the Gophers’ men’s gymnastics win against Iowa and Nebraska.

Wokurka tore his right ACL during the second rotation on his floor exercise routine. He suffered the same injury to his left knee just two years ago.

A pair of Gophers men’s gymnasts has a unique opportunity this weekend: a chance to make the U.S. national team.

That, and they get to go to Vegas.

Senior DJ Repp and freshman Ellis Mannon will compete Thursday in the 2012 Winter Cup in Las Vegas for two of the eight open spots on the U.S. national men’s gymnastics team.

“Minnesota has a long tradition of guys being on the national team,” head coach Mike Burns said. “It is what we strive for and what we hope for.

The Gophers men’s gymnastics team continued its successful results in Colorado Springs, Colo. this Saturday against the U.S. Air Force Academy.

No. 8 Minnesota scored 345.4 collective points to defeat host No. 10 Air Force’s 337.7.

“Overall it was a much-improved performance from these guys,” head coach Mike Burns said. “I think it was one of those nights where they come away from it going, ‘Yeah, we are a good team.’ They knew it, but now they’ve proved it.”

After a disappointing first two rotations, the No. 7 Minnesota men’s gymnastics team regained its composure to beat No. 11 Illinois-Chicago 339.4 to 321.3.

The two teams had just met last weekend when UIC hosted the Windy City Invitational. The Gophers finished fourth and defeated UIC by 10.9 points.

The first home meet of the season opened Saturday at the Sports Pavilion with a shaky start on the floor exercise for host Minnesota.

The Gophers men’s gymnastics team finished fourth out of six in its NCAA championship team qualifying session Thursday. With the top three teams from each session advancing, the Gophers were eliminated but sent seven gymnasts to Friday’s individual competition.

Again, Minnesota tasted defeat.

This weekend the men’s gymnastics team heads to Columbus, Ohio, to compete in the NCAA championships. Though winning the outright title isn’t necessarily the expectation, the 8th-ranked Gopher’s shouldn’t be excluded from consideration.

“Winning the title would be hard to do,” head coach Mike Burns said. “But we are here and anything can happen.”

Freshman gymnast Kayla Slechta set a pretty high bar this weekend.

And it wasn’t one on which she had to perform during this weekend’s NCAA regional meet.

After four strong performances, including two top-10 finishes, Slechta ended the meet in fourth place in all-around to advance to the NCAA championships in two weeks.

“It definitely puts a little bit more pressure on me [for the future], but I like the challenge,” she said. “Hopefully next year we’re making it as a team.”
