MADISON, Wis. — With the excitement of an outdoor game Sunday looming, it was easy to forget that crucial WCHA points were up for grabs inside the Kohl Center on Friday night.

The Gophers picked up two points with a 3-2 victory over the Wisconsin and closed the gap with the two teams in front of them in the conference standings, St. Cloud State and North Dakota, whom are both idle this weekend.

Minnesota and Wisconsin will play again Sunday at Soldier Field as part the OfficeMax Hockey City Classic.

Many things will be different between the Gophers’ game Friday at Wisconsin and their game Sunday against the Badgers. The two teams will be playing in a different city and wearing different sweaters.

And they’ll be playing outside.

After facing off inside Wisconsin’s Kohl Center on Friday, the border rivals will play outside at Soldier Field in Chicago as a part of the OfficeMax Hockey City Classic.

ST. CLOUD, Minn. — The Gophers and St. Cloud State gave two capacity crowds at the National Hockey and Event Center something entertaining to watch this weekend.

The two teams split their regular-season conference series in St. Cloud, Minn. The No. 1 Gophers won 4-2 on Friday, and the No. 8 Huskies returned the favor with a 4-3 win on Saturday.

Gophers head coach Don Lucia said he wasn’t terribly disappointed with a split in St. Cloud, and he was happy with how his team fought back Saturday.

The Gophers put three pucks past St. Cloud State goaltender Ryan Faragher in the first period, but they needed three goals after that to secure a 4-2 win over WCHA leader St. Cloud.

Zach Budish scored two goals in the game’s opening period in St. Cloud, Minn., and both were waived off following an official review.

Minnesota turned its luck around after the first, though St. Cloud refused to go away.

The Huskies tied the game at 2-2 four minutes into the third period when Drew LeBlanc scored his ninth goal of the year.

Most hockey fans believed from the start of the season that the leader of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association would be in action this weekend for the series between Minnesota and St. Cloud State.

Few would have guessed the Huskies would be the team atop the standings.

The No. 1 Gophers (18-4-4, 10-4-4 WCHA) will travel to SCSU for a two-game conference matchup this weekend. It’s the only time the two schools will play in the regular season.

An average Gophers men’s hockey game consists of three 20-minute periods on flat ice and numerous checks into the boards.

An average ice cross downhill run consists of plunging nearly 50 feet down a 400-meter track, navigating various turns and jumps all while trying to avoid crashing into the three other athletes on the course.

It’s called Red Bull Crashed Ice, after all.

Team USA coach Charlie Wasley and U.S. athlete Brian Schack are both former Gophers hockey players who have found a new niche in the growing sport of ice cross.

After an emotional series with North Dakota last weekend, the No. 1 Gophers knew it wasn’t going to get much easier down the stretch. No. 14 Minnesota State-Mankato proved that notion correct over the weekend.

The Gophers (18-4-4, 10-4-4 WCHA) and Mavericks split a two-game home-and-home series. Minnesota rebounded with a 4-1 win Saturday in Mankato, Minn., after losing 2-1 on Friday at Mariucci Arena.

Friday’s loss snapped a 10-game unbeaten streak for the Gophers. The Mavericks have accounted for half of Minnesota’s losses this season.

Few expected Friday’s game between the Gophers and Minnesota State-Mankato to a barnburner. In that regard, the game lived up to its expectations.

But the result -- a 2-1 Mavericks win -- was unexpected.

Brett Knowles scored with 44 seconds left to give the No. 14 Mavericks the victory over the No. 1 Gophers. It was Minnesota's first loss since Nov. 30.

“You knew it was going to be low-scoring. One play was going to make the game,” Gophers head coach Don Lucia said. “They made the play in the final minute.”

It’s rare for a freshman to stand out in his first year of college hockey. It’s even rarer for a freshman to flourish in net, but Adam Wilcox and Stephon Williams are doing just that.

The two freshman goaltenders will battle this weekend when Wilcox’s No. 1 Gophers and Williams’ No. 14 Mavericks, from Minnesota State-Mankato, conclude their regular season series with two home-and-home contests.

The goalies split a similar series earlier this season, with both teams winning at home.
