Gophers soccer star Taylor Uhl has asked for a release from her scholarship and will transfer, the team confirmed Tuesday.

The sophomore forward was one of the top players in the nation. She had 21 of the Gophers’ 44 goals and led the Big Ten in points last season. She was the Gophers’ top goal- and point-scorer in both 2011 and 2012.

“I’ll always be a Gopher fan at heart,” Uhl posted to her Twitter account Tuesday afternoon. “Thanks to everyone at the U who has helped me in my time here. Trusting God through this new journey.”

Men’s basketball

The Gophers men’s basketball team inked two recruits from the Chicago area Wednesday.

Alvin Ellis and Alex Foster each signed letters of intent. They are the first two recruits for head coach Tubby Smith in 2013.

“Feels like a great day to sign!” Foster tweeted Wednesday.

Foster, a 6-foot-8-inch forward from Seton Academy in South Hollan, Ill., is ranked a three-star recruit and the 11th best prospect in Illinois by ESPN.

The Big Ten is sending five teams to the NCAA soccer tournament. Minnesota is not one of them.

Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State all made the tournament field.

The Gophers failed to advance to the second round of the Big Ten tournament, falling to Illinois on penalty kicks Oct. 31 after a double-overtime tie.

Minnesota finished fourth in the Big Ten, higher than both Illinois and Wisconsin.

Stefanie Golan’s first year as Gophers head women’s soccer coach likely ended with disappointment as her team lost to Illinois on penalty kicks in the first round of the Big Ten tournament.

A win Wednesday in Bloomington, Ind., would likely have propelled the Gophers into the NCAA tournament. But after tying Illinois 2-2 and losing 3-2 in the penalty kick round, the team will need a miracle.

“It just hurt and stung to know that it ended so soon,” senior captain Olivia Bagnall said.

The Gophers headed to Bloomington, Ind., earlier this month and left with a loss.

On Wednesday, they’ll play a different team with different stakes in the same place.

No. 4-seeded Minnesota will draw No. 5 Illinois in the first round of the Big Ten tournament.

“We’re going in there excited to be there, excited to be the No. 4 seed — but definitely not satisfied,” head coach Stefanie Golan said. “The team wants to go pretty deep, and we want to earn an NCAA tournament bid.”

Minnesota knew what it had to do Friday to nab the No. 4 seed in the Big Ten tournament — win.

The team got that spot Friday when it defeated Nebraska 4-2 in Lincoln, Neb.

The Gophers saw a 2-0 lead disappear as the Cornhuskers scored two goals within 10 minutes in the second half.

But Minnesota never lost confidence that it would find a way to win.

“I think everyone knew we’d come back,” senior Tamara Strahota  said. “We had been dominating the entire game up until [it was tied].”

The Gophers hold their Big Ten tournament seeding fate in its hands.

And that’s how they prefer it.

A win at Nebraska on Friday would secure the Gophers the fourth seed in the Big Ten tournament next week.

Gophers head coach Stefanie Golan said it’s the best position to be in because they don’t have to rely on other teams.

She said it takes a lot of pressure off the players knowing that if they win, the fourth seed is locked in and they don’t have to wait for other teams’ results.

Sophomore forward Taylor Uhl entered the weekend leading the NCAA in points scored.

On Sunday, Purdue saw why.

Uhl carried the Gophers’ offense with a hat trick in their 5-1 victory in West Lafayette, Ind.

The hat trick was her third of the season and the fifth of her career.

“For her to finish with a hat trick in a Big Ten game, that’s a pretty huge deal,” head coach Stefanie Golan said. “She still continues to push, she still continues to fight, she still continues to be pretty dangerous for us.”

The road has not been friendly to the Gophers soccer team this season.

Minnesota lost its fourth road game in five attempts Friday at Indiana, falling 2-0.

Despite outshooting the Hoosiers 16-6, the Gophers couldn’t find the back of the net.

Indiana’s Abby Smith found the back post for the first goal in the 22nd minute off a cross from the right endline. In the 30th minute, Orianica Velasquez shot a ball into the far post for Indiana’s second goal.

The Hoosiers had just five shots on goal.

With just three games remaining in the regular season, the Gophers are in a good position.

And they know it.

With wins over Illinois and Northwestern last weekend, the Gophers picked up six big points. They currently have 13 points, which is tied for fourth in the conference.

They beat the team they’re tied with, Illinois, 3-0 last weekend.

“We’ve got a great opportunity in front of us, and that’s what we’re presenting to the girls,” assistant coach Deana Waintraub said.
