The Gophers soccer team split a weekend series in Illinois this weekend against Illinois State and DePaul.

Minnesota (3-5) defeated the Redbirds (3-3) on Friday — which snapped a two-game losing streak — but fell to the Blue Demons (2-5) on Sunday.

Friday night the Gophers won 1-0 as both teams endured a wet field and rainy conditions.

The lone goal of the match was scored on a breakaway by Minnesota freshman Taylor Uhl in the 79th minute. Uhl is the leading scorer for the Gophers this year with five goals.

After a disappointing weekend at the Minnesota Gold Classic, the Gopher women’s soccer team will look to get back on track when they head east to take on Illinois State and DePaul.

Minnesota (2-4) will face the Redbirds (3-2) Friday and take on the Blue Demons (0-5) on Sunday.

The Gophers are coming off a weekend where they vastly outshot their opponents but struggled to put the ball in the back of the net, resulting in losses to Georgia and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. With that many chances, it was not surprising what the team focused on in practice.

Head coach Mikki Denney Wright was not pleased after getting swept on her home turf this weekend. After chippy play Sunday, a yellow card was the difference maker in the Gophers’ 1-0 loss to University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Minnesota (2-4) hosted the Minnesota Gold Classic at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium this weekend, which brought in the University of Georgia on Friday and UW-Milwaukee on Sunday.
Despite owning huge shot advantages in both games, Minnesota struggled to finish scoring chances all weekend. They lost 2-1 in overtime Friday and were shutout 1-0 on Sunday.

The Minnesota soccer program is reaching national prominence. In two of the last three seasons — 2008 and 2010 — the Gophers reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament, and now members of those squads are being recruited to play at the highest level.

The 2010 soccer season was one of the most successful ever for the Gophers women’s team, which made the Sweet 16 for the second time in team history, not to mention the second time in the last three years.

But 2010 was also the last hurrah for seven of the team’s seniors, making a solid 2011 recruiting class all but essential for another run next season.

Conventional wisdom would suggest that, by default, losing that many seniors would make 2011 a rebuilding year.

Gophers coach Mikki Denney Wright had a different take.

It was déjà vu in the worst possible way.

The Gophers had advanced to their second Sweet Sixteen in three years. Again they faced a Big East opponent, again snowbanks surrounded a frozen field, and yet again a single late goal eliminated Minnesota from the NCAA women’s soccer tournament in heartbreaking fashion.

Georgetown scored on a chaotic corner kick with 44 seconds remaining in regulation to beat the Gophers 1-0 Saturday at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.

The 8,000 square yards of green might have been a mirage. With every other blade of grass in the metro area hidden beneath 10 inches of the season’s first snowfall, here were a few million that were perfectly manicured, having been meticulously uncovered by a grounds crew that worked into the wee hours of Sunday morning to make the field playable at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
