For the past few years, pole vaulter Sam Sonnenberg has done most of her work from the shadows — the shadows of top vaulters before her, such as Alicia Rue and Laura Massey.

This year, Sonnenberg stands alone and is the only Gophers women’s track and field representative at this weekend’s NCAA indoor championships.

“The previous years she’s had Alicia to hide behind a little bit, just a little bit out of the spotlight,” vaults coach Caroline White said. “Now the younger vaulters need her to be that for them.”

In the wake of his team’s fifth-straight Big Ten title, men’s track head coach Steve Plasencia has earned his fifth-straight Big Ten Coach of the Year award.

Big Ten coaches vote on the award, and the indoor season accolade will go on the trophy shelf next to his indoor and outdoor awards from 2009 and 2010.

Since taking over in the summer of 2008 after running the cross country program for 12 years, Plasencia has earned every Coach of the Year honor for the conference.

The Gophers men’s track and field team earned its fifth-straight Big Ten championship Sunday with its third-consecutive indoor title.
Since head coach Steve Plasencia took over the program in 2008, he is a perfect 5-for-5 in conference championships.
“When we walk into the gym to compete I think that we’ve gained a measure of respect of our competitors in the conference,” Plasencia said. “Our guys have a reputation of being gamers and hopefully people outside the program can see that.”

The Minnesota men’s track and field team is heading to the Big Ten championships this weekend as four-time defending champions, and the Gophers aren’t planning on giving up their spot at the top.

Since head coach Steve Plasencia took over the program in the summer of 2008, his team is a perfect 4-for-4 in conference title meets, including two consecutive indoor championships.

Minnesota has a long way to go, however, if it intends to capture the longest streak in Big Ten history –– that honor belongs to Wisconsin, which won eight straight last decade.

Ben Blankenship has to be falling in love with the tracks in Seattle. Blankenship set a new school record for the men’s indoor 3,000-meter race Saturday at the Husky Classic.

His mark of 7:52.52 also earned him an NCAA automatic qualifier time and bettered the school record by more than two seconds — no small feat in a race that length.

At the NCAA track championships Saturday, Gabe Anderson etched out another chapter in her ever-expanding lore — and Gopher history to boot — when she made a late push to finish second in the 1,500-meter run.
That tied the Gophers record for the highest finish in a women’s outdoor track championship, and was the highlight of Minnesota’s showing at the championships in Eugene, Oregon over the weekend.
