The Gophers men’s swimming and diving team took a step in the right direction at the NCAA championships this weekend, improving on last season’s disappointing finish.

Minnesota accrued 53 team points at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis and tied for 18th place, six places higher than last season.

“We had a pretty simple goal coming in here: to finish higher than we did a year ago,” head coach Kelly Kremer said. “We’re moving back in the right direction.”

The Gophers men’s swimming and diving team heads to the NCAA championships this weekend with the memory of a disappointing finish last season on its mind.

The team took 24th place at the championships last season, its worst NCAA finish since 1990.

“All we talked about this year was being better,” head coach Kelly Kremer said. “If we could move up the list, we’ll be happy with where we finish, providing that we perform well all the way through.”

The Gophers women’s swimming and diving team capped one of its best seasons ever Saturday with a 10th-place finish at the NCAA championships at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis.

The top-10 finish was the third in program history and the first since 2011. Twelve Minnesota swimmers and divers earned All-America honors during the weekend.

“Just being top-10 at the NCAA [championships] is an accomplishment that not a lot of people get to do,” senior captain Haley Spencer said.

The Gophers women’s swimming and diving team will send a school-record 16 swimmers and divers to the NCAA championships, thanks in part to the efforts of divers Maggie Keefer and Sarah McCrady.

Keefer and McCrady, both juniors, qualified for the championships this week at the NCAA Zone D diving meet in Houston. Keefer qualified Tuesday by placing second in the 1-meter diving competition, and McCrady qualified with a second-place finish in platform diving Wednesday.

The Gophers women’s swimming and diving team added an important piece to its NCAA roster Tuesday: junior diver Maggie Keefer.

Keefer qualified Tuesday for the NCAA championships by placing second in the 1-meter diving competition at the NCAA Zone D diving meet in Houston.

The Gophers women finished 11th at the NCAA championships last season, and Keefer was a key contributor, scoring in all three diving events.

The Gophers men’s swimming diving team officially earned its first spot in the NCAA championships, which run March 28-30 in Indianapolis.

Senior Mikey Ross qualified for the championships Monday by placing third in 1-meter diving at the NCAA Zone D diving meet in Houston.

But don’t expect the Gophers to be a one-hit wonder.

The Gophers men’s swimming and diving team enjoyed a dynasty over the Big Ten championships as recently as 2007.

But the program that won five conference championships from 2001-07 has finished no higher than third since then.

Michigan has won four of the past five Big Ten championships and gone 34-1 in conference dual meets since the 2007-08 season. The Wolverines are seeking their third consecutive Big Ten title this week.
