Today it is incumbent upon Americans to remember not only those horrifically murdered last Sept. 11, but also those needlessly killed in the year since by a presidential administration ostensibly acting in their name.

for most of us, the future anniversaries of Sept. 11 during our lives will be days that ask for time to pause and reflect. This first anniversary comes too soon for those who grieve to have healed. It comes too soon for clues on how the next generation will understand what Sept. 11 means. It is not too soon to take stock of whether we are finding our way forward.

sOUTH BEND, Ind. (U-Wire) - I received an e-mail message this week. You probably received one like it. It began, "On Sept. 11 wear red, white, and blue." The words on the screen then faded and for a full five minutes my computer flickered with those images of human suffering we saw everywhere last fall in the glossy pages of magazines and on the flash of TV screens.

the world looks different from South Africa, where I've been this summer, building relationships with democracy groups and universities. The trip demonstrated to me, especially as the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks draws near, that our country's profession of innocence in the world is not so innocent.

since Sept. 11 we have seen a surge in patriotism in the United States. Slogans such as "God bless America" and "united we stand" have been displayed everywhere. As an international student studying in this country, I can say that international students will be taking stock of the Sept. 11 attacks. How should we remember Sept. 11? What have we learned from the event?

they jokingly say the state bird of Minnesota is the mosquito, but the joke isn't so funny these days now that West Nile virus - carried by the buzzing pests - has infiltrated the state.

Imagine before us a young child playing with toy blocks. First she tosses the blocks unthinkingly into a big heap. Okay, we say, so far she's done nothing particularly interesting or difficult. But, wait - now she has begun to arrange the blocks to build something: a tower, a bridge, a ramp, something. Ah-ha, we say, now there's an achievement!

for the past few years, Minneapolis neighborhoods surrounding the University have experienced some of the highest crime levels in the area. The Minneapolis Police Second Precinct SAFE Unit offers some crime prevention advice for students living off campus: Common sense and simple security practices can help keep you and your property safe.

Welcome back to the rat race, everybody. Here we go again. It is a yearly custom each fall that we, columnists at the Minnesota Daily, pass on our sanguine knowledge and experiences to the new students here at the University. I have listed below some of my advice for University life and how, sometimes by following them but usually by not following them, you can make the transition into college life a little easier.

Assassination sites and parties just don't mix. There's something odd and creepy about trying to have a good time in a place where someone was killed. You're trying to schmooze and show off, but then you realize you're in a place where an assassin once stood. Yeah, creepy.
