Throughout history, precise renderings of foliage have served about as many purposes as the plants themselves. Botanical art, located at the intersection of art and science, has a way of conveying rich tales of people and their environments.

These kinds of botanical stories dominate the personal history of Marilyn Garber, founder of the Minnesota School of Botanical Art. As a child, her playground was a prairie-flowered hill in Emmetsburg, Iowa. As an adult, she followed her nose to Panama, where she recorded plants on the land of the Kuna people.

A maritime archeologist gives a glimpse into the vast treasures lying at the bottom of the ocean and how they eventually wind up in museums.

Home to 83,000 objects spanning 5,000 years of human history, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts collection only represents a puny fraction of the artifacts yet to be discovered on the ocean floor. Recent research from the Mediterranean Sea estimates that mariners — and the beginning of humans littering the ocean floor — date back more than 100,000 years.

But none of these baffling statistics seem to make Alexis Catsambis’ voice quiver. As an underwater archeologist who deals in lost civilizations’ sunken scrap, he’s used to a lot of uncertainty.

Steve Ackerman tinkered with a cutout of a character named “Tummy da Talking Turtle” on the edge of the stage for PuppetLab 2013. The scaly, 2-D creature is the main character of “Cartooon,” Ackerman’s puppet project exploring the colorful world of the classic animation style.

“It’s pretty crowded in here,” he said.

Building debris and unearthed rocks lie exposed in a deep pit next to the Soap Factory. As construction crews finish up work on another high-end apartment complex, continuing to mask the former industry of Northeast Minneapolis, the 25-year-old art collective next door examines the past.

After needing an advertisement for his college band’s show, he designed a comic book-inspired flyer that would eventually carve out his career path. Plastered on various dive bars’ bathroom stalls and entryways, artist David Witt’s first “exhibitions” prompted an explosion of output.

“I figured it’s a way to get my work out there without going through the galleries,” Witt said. “I just stick it up in a bar.”
