In the Twin Cities, biking is more than transportation -- it’s a culture and a community. Minneapolis art gallery Altered Esthetics is no stranger to the expressive side of cycling. With their sixth annual “Bike Art” exhibition rolling out Friday, the gallery will show how cycling is more than getting from point A to point B.

Art and practicality have had a strange affair over the years. Andy Warhol said that an artist is somebody who produces something that people don’t need to have. While, technically, people don’t need to have painted walls, they have them because they’re pretty. Recent University of Minnesota graduate and talented artistic mind Broc Blegen seeks to make them even prettier.

It took five days, two hired hands, the generous help of friends and a forklift to install Robin Schwartzman’s vibrant, highly interactive piece in the Katherine E. Nash Gallery. The set looks something like a cartoon version of a McDonald’s play place brought to life, minus the crying kids and the maximum height limit.

As the Minneapolis art community basks in the glory of its glimmering scene, its twin sister is often left lurking outside of general conversation. This weekend the St. Paul art community will creep out from the shadow of its younger, more celebrated sibling and once again assert itself as an old and wily but still thriving scene.

This weekend a wondrous aroma will leak from the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and billow out into the streets. An expected 20,000 guests will let their noses lead them to the 28th annual “Art in Bloom” exhibit.
