The old rock ‘n’ roll adage tells us “if it’s too loud, you’re too old.” And while that snarky nugget of wisdom has become a bit of a cliché since Kiss’ heyday, it’s not entirely outdated. But sometimes age has nothing to do with it. Sometimes it actually is too loud. And in the ever-widening realm of indie, there isn’t a single band more obsessed with this sort of sonic excess than Brooklyn duo Sleigh Bells.

Is Damien Jurado the sixth Fleet Fox or are Fleet Foxes five Damien Jurados?

Even though Maraqopa is not a real place, or a real anything, Seattle folk stalwart Damien Jurado might have you fooled into thinking otherwise. With Oregon producer Richard Swift, he’s built with a series of soundscapes that are so genuine you might find yourself Googling “train tickets to Maraqopa.”

Unearthly backing vocals slink behind Jurado’s simple, philosophical lyrics. At times, his voice is so strong you could build a wagon with it and head out west to join him in Washington.

Brian DeRemer didn’t know much about the robbery that Christmas morning when the news first broke.

In a fit of rage, his production partner and friend, Alarmist frontman Eric Lovold, had posted a status about it on Facebook. His recording studio, located in St. Paul, had been broken into. It was Christmas Eve and Lovold, a longtime and well-respected member of the local music community, returned to his apartment to find a trove of TVs, iPods and computers missing. He’d soon find out roughly $25,000 worth of electronic equipment had been stolen from the studio that night.

With mid-February days away, Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, as is the backlash that accompanies it each year. Public displays of affection and mushy subplots on every episode of network television can feel assaultive to the hopelessly alone. Denouncements of the holiday may be more common than endorsements.

It is a state of mind that local playwright and storyteller Kevin Kling understands but that certainly does not mean that he subscribes to it. “There is a negative impression of Valentine’s Day because there is a pressure associated with it.

“Kisses on the Bottom”

Artist: Paul McCartney

Label: Hear Music

Paul McCartney’s latest release is the musical equivalent of a friendly wink from an elderly neighbor: a well-meaning but anachronistic show of affection. “Kisses on the Bottom” is a collection of jazzy standards with two originals thrown in.

McCartney hands us this bouquet with the knowing smile of a man who probably has more experience with love than any non-former Beatle ever will. And it shows — he croons with care, gently and calmly.

Artist: Sharon Van Etten

Album: Tramp

Label: Jagjaguwar

In her little-heard debut “Because I Was In Love,” Sharon Van Etten introduced herself at her most vulnerable. She cooed over acoustic guitar and lamented, “One day, I’ll be a better writer.” In her sophomore offering, “Epic,” she returned with her teeth clenched and solidified her fiery but pained folk sound.
