The Minister of Health of China was greeted by the University of Minnesota campus with applause and controversy Monday.

University Regent John Frobenius presented Chen Zhu with an honorary Doctor of Science degree Monday night for his work in the field of leukemia research and his work on moving China forward in health reform after Chen gave a speech earlier that day.

But some professors disagree with giving an honorary degree to Chen.

A jury heard from family members of al-Shabab fighters Wednesday in the trial of a man accused of helping Minneapolis men return to their native Somalia to fight with the terrorist organization.

The government spent Wednesday building the case that the men who left for Somalia didn’t have ample resources to make the trip on their own. It alleges Mahamud Said Omar organized and helped pay for the men to go to Somalia to fight.

The court heard emotional testimony from family members of three men who were allegedly recruited to fight in Somalia.

This past summer, members of EWB-UMN traveled to Guatemala and Uganda to make clean water more accessible.

The group is part of the national organization Engineers Without Borders USA, which works to improve the quality of life around the world through engineering projects.

Adam Lindberg is exhausted.

His son was born two years ago, in the midst of Lindberg’s doctorate program. When classes started in the fall, he told his students he would be sleep deprived that semester — not just needing to catch up, he said, but nearly hallucinating.

Though that anxiety has passed, new ones have emerged in its place. His wife planned to begin working after the first year, but has been unable to find work. This means they are living on Lindberg’s graduate teaching salary — no more than $15,000 per year.

A mix of legislators, government officials, professors, researchers and energy industry personnel accompanied Lt. Gov. Yvonne Prettner Solon on a trip to Germany to discuss green energy policies in mid-November.
