Katie Loberg may be graduating in a few weeks with her journalism degree, but the former Gophers basketball forward could pass for a freshman on the track and field team.

Loberg joined the team about a month ago as a high jumper, a role she hasn’t competed as since high school. But in her first season with the Gophers, the 6-foot-4-inch senior still has to carry all the equipment when the team travels.

The cold temperatures and wintry mix that fell in Minneapolis on Wednesday forced the cancelation of both the Gophers baseball and softball games.

The baseball team was scheduled to play Division III St. Thomas.

Wednesday’s cancellation was Minnesota’s fifth of the season. Two other games have been postponed.

The Gophers will travel to State College, Pa., this weekend for a three-game series against Penn State.

The Gophers can’t seem to escape connections to athletics director Norwood Teague.

Minnesota’s men’s tennis team will face Virginia Commonwealth, Teague’s former school, in the first round of the NCAA tournament May 10. The Gophers lost 5-2 to the Rams in January, but they played much better in the second half of the season.

As a sophomore, rower Becky Kinchen had to build a robot as part of her Introduction to Engineering class.

So naturally, she created a “row-bot.”

Kinchen, a mechanical engineering senior, built a model rowboat that could trip a sensor and raise and lower a drawbridge.

With three Big Ten series left to play, Minnesota leads second-place foes Indiana and Nebraska by one game in the loss column.

Nine conference games remain, but the Gophers have a favorable schedule the rest of the way with only one road series.

Indiana and Nebraska will meet for a three-game set this weekend, meaning that the Gophers would gain ground on at least one of the teams by winning their weekend series at Penn State.

Wally Ellenson works 40 hours a week and doesn’t get paid for it.

As summer nears, the freshman athlete estimates he spends more than a full-time job’s hours practicing for Gophers men’s basketball — and track and field.

The Rice Lake, Wis., native is better known for high-flying dunks at Williams Arena, but he’s competing in the high jump for the men’s track and field team this spring.

Erik Van Rooyen is a professional golfer in a Gophers uniform.

The senior on the men’s golf team has been one of the program’s best golfers since he first set foot on campus. He plans to turn pro after the NCAA tournament this spring.

In January, Van Rooyen earned a spot in the Sunshine Tour, a PGA Tour affiliate based in his native South Africa.

But he has at least one more tournament to play at Minnesota — the NCAA regional starting May 16.

A victory in that tournament is the only way he can advance  to the NCAA championships May 28.

When professional baseball came knocking, Gophers outfielder Troy Larson didn’t pay much attention.

A few years back, a professional scout sent Larson a questionnaire.

“He walked into my office and said, ‘Do I have to fill this out?’” Minnesota head coach John Anderson recalled. “‘I don’t want to be a pro player. I want to be a doctor.’”

Larson is well on his way to living out that dream.

Richard Pitino has taken steps to distance himself from the Tubby Smith era of Gophers basketball, taking very little from the national champion coach.

But the University of Minnesota officially announced four additions to Pitino’s staff late last week, one of whom was a special assistant to Smith during his six years with the Gophers.
