The Gophers men’s golf team earned its best finish of the season during the weekend at the Hawkeye Invitational.

Minnesota finished tied for third out of 12 teams with a score of 16-over par at the Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, Iowa.

Kansas won the meet at 3-over par, while rival Iowa finished second.

Junior Alex Gaugert finished fourth individually to lead Minnesota. He shot a career-best 68 in the second round Saturday and was tied for the lead heading into the final round.

An earlier version of the story incorrectly stated what part of the body John DuToit suffered tendinitis. The injury was to his wrist.

The Gophers men’s tennis team bounced back from one of its worst losses of the season during the weekend, and it might have earned a spot in the NCAA tournament in the process.

The Gophers beat Indiana 6-1 on Friday and beat Purdue 5-2 on Sunday. They’ve won seven of their past eight matches, and the only loss was a 7-0 defeat to conference juggernaut Ohio State last weekend.

Minnesota (11-9, 7-2 Big Ten) has two conference matches left before the postseason. It needs to finish above .500 to qualify for the NCAA tournament in a little more than a month.

The Gophers men’s track and field team beat the No. 1 team in the nation and tied the No. 2 team Saturday at the John McDonnell Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.

No. 22 Minnesota tallied 137 team points to tie for first with Arkansas and edge out third-place Texas A&M with 129 team points.

“Texas A&M and Arkansas have some quality teams, and so to get into the hunt with them is a good performance,” head coach Steve Plasencia said.

The Gophers football team took its spring semester midterm Friday night.

The team scrimmaged at the Gibson-Nagurski Football Complex with fans and recruits dotting the sidelines.

The second-team offense, led by quarterback Mitch Leidner, looked strong, scoring twice against the second-unit defense.

Leidner was 9-for-11 on the night, throwing one touchdown and impressing coaches with his poise. The 6-foot-4-inch, 233-pound redshirt freshman also displayed his mobility as he scrambled for a touchdown.

The Gophers women’s rowing team was eager to prove its merit this weekend against No. 18 Louisville.

It’ll have to wait another week to do so.

A set of heavy winds and 18-inch whitecaps on Lake Macbride in Solon, Iowa, led to the cancelation of Saturday’s meet against Louisville, No. 15 Wisconsin and unranked Iowa.

Minnesota will face Louisville next weekend as part of the 19-team Clemson Invitational.

The Gophers softball team continued its hot start in Big Ten play by sweeping Illinois during the weekend.

Minnesota (26-13, 9-3 Big Ten) played in Champaign, Ill., despite being the home team in the series. The three games were scheduled to be played in Minneapolis, but crummy weather forced a last-minute switch to Illinois.

The Gophers won a doubleheader 5-1 and 2-0 on Saturday before completing the sweep with a 9-3 victory Sunday.

Head coach Jessica Allister said the team took the location change in stride.

Richard Pitino’s newly hired assistant coach Kimani Young will make more money than any of former coach Tubby Smith’s assistants.

Pitino, who will make about $600,000 less than Smith per year as Gophers head basketball coach, has named two assistants and has two spots left to fill.

Young and newly appointed director of basketball operations Mike Balado started his tenure Thursday.

Pitino, the son of legendary coach Rick Pitino, took less than a week to hire half of his staff. It took the Gophers about a week-and-a-half to hire him.

Gophers head coach John Anderson envisioned a starting rotation of juniors Tom Windle, Alec Crawford and DJ Snelten before the season.

After seeing it in action for the first time, it’s easy to see why.

Minnesota, behind strong starting pitching and outstanding work by the bullpen, swept Northwestern during the weekend to improve to 7-2 in the Big Ten.

All three of the Gophers’ starters pitched well. Crawford and Snelten both earned victories, and Windle threw five innings of one-run ball Friday en route to a no-decision.

The Gophers softball team entered this season intending to avoid the midseason slump that hindered its campaign last year.

So far, so good, through three Big Ten series.

Minnesota started last season with an 18-7 record in nonconference play, but it lost to Illinois in two of its first three conference games.

New Gophers men’s basketball coach Richard Pitino is bringing two of his assistant coaches to Minnesota from Florida International.

Mike Balado and Kimani Young were announced as assistant coaches Wednesday afternoon — five days after the press conference that named Pitino as Tubby Smith’s successor.

Pitino hired Balado and Young to coach at FIU during his one-year stint with the Golden Panthers, when FIU won its most games since 1997-98.
