East Bank buildings restrict access

Starting Monday, University of Minnesota buildings on the East Bank campus will have limited hours, part of an initiative to reduce crime in the area.

The changes are an expansion of the Building Access Pilot Program, said University Services Vice President Pamela Wheelock in an email to University students and staff Friday.

After starting a similar program on the University’s West Bank in February, buildings will only be accessible to the public between 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and will be accessible with a U Card between 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. and between 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Outside of those hours, buildings will not be accessible to anyone without permission.

Wheelock said in the email the program went “very smoothly” on the West Bank, and will be expanding to St. Paul. University officials hope to have all buildings under the program by mid-August, she said.
